Serving International Students
When Christians think of serving people from other countries, they often think of foreign missions; but there are also opportunities to personally befriend and serve people from other countries at your local university.
Lawrence University has a volunteer program called the "Friendship Family Program" which matches international students from all over the world with local families. Families and their student matches can participate in on-campus and university-planned events together, or they can get together on their own (over the years our family has included our students in things like family meals, apple picking, Thanksgiving celebration, movie nights, etc. -- sometimes students have even stayed with us for a few days over breaks). People sometimes assume extremes about religion and students: while we can never, of course, make a student an evangelistic "project," we also don't need to go to the other extreme of hiding the religious side of our family. Students from other countries -- even non-Christian students -- are often interested in visiting an American church and do not have social taboos about discussing religion like we often do in the U.S. The best way to enter in to a program like this is an interest in serving and in sharing your lives.

1-Week Service Opportunity with InterVarsity (May)
Each spring & summer 1500 InterVarsity students from the Great Lakes Regions attend week-long training camps at Cedar Campus and Camp Timber Wolf in Michigan. Most of the students attend in May prior to the camps summer crew arrival. We are looking for adults of all ages, from recent graduates to retirees, who could work a week or more at camp. Come alone or as a group from your church.
This volunteer experience is a ministry vacation—a time surrounded by nature’s beauty, serving highly motivated college students as they seek to learn more about God and how to become our leaders of the future. We need volunteers to assist:
in the kitchen
on the buildings and grounds
in housekeeping
Room and board is covered. Travel costs are not covered. You will be able to attend evening worship and Bible exposition if you like. Help is needed from May 2-22. Most camps run Saturday to Friday, but we can work around your schedule.
If you want to serve, please contact Greg Hall at greg_hall@ivstaff.org.
